Context
The cultural and creative sector has a constantly growing wealth of data. However, this data is often difficult to access or stored in isolation in different institutions. To meet this challenge, a cultural data space should provide a secure digital infrastructure that allows cultural professionals, creatives, cultural institutions and researchers to share and use their data in an efficient and controlled manner.
The Cultural Data Space, which is currently being set up by acatech, addresses these challenges as a protected marketplace for collaboration, data exchange and data-driven business models. The aim of the project is to create a sovereign, cross-sector and cross-national digital network of cultural data. To support the sustainable further development of this project, actori was commissioned to conduct a market analysis for the cultural data space. The aim of this was to assess the market potential, possible offer portfolios and the willingness to pay of potential participants.
Approach
actori first evaluated the strategic and organisational planning of the culture data room as part of a status quo analysis. In order to validate the assumptions made by acatech and place them in a broader context, a benchmark comparison was also carried out in which comparable data rooms were analysed in terms of quantitative and qualitative key figures.
On this basis, a survey was conducted among potential participants in the data room. The aim of the survey was to record awareness of and interest in the culture data room and also to determine the willingness to pay and the needs of potential participants. With over 350 responses, the survey provided valuable insights. Building on this, digital workshops and interviews were conducted with relevant focus groups. There, the findings from the survey were further deepened and concretised, with the specific requirements of the various target groups being worked out in detail.
Impact
- The market analysis provides a clear and well-founded decision-making basis for the next steps, including opportunities and challenges.
- actori showed concrete options for action to further develop the ‘cultural data space’ both strategically and economically in a sustainable manner.
- Thanks to the targeted opportunities for participation, the needs of the relevant stakeholders were incorporated directly into the planning.
