The Historische Museum optimizes its operation

The Historisches Museum Basel (HMB) is one of the most important cultural history museums in Switzerland. In 2018/2019 actori carried out an operational analysis for the museum with its three buildings (Barfüsserkirche, Haus zum Kirschgarten, Musikmuseum). With 39 measures, concrete recommendations for action to optimize the operation were determined as well as decisive courses for the further development of the operation; among them, three overarching projects are worth mentioning: The strategic development of a mission statement, the implementation of a general inventory and the improvement of the depot situation.

The implementation of the three projects has already begun. For example, the HMB has developed a new strategy with the involvement of the museum commission and the staff, which has now been approved by the government council and sets the guidelines for the next 10 years.

As far as the depot situation is concerned, it has become clear that the merger of all nine depot locations into one central depot will result in important synergy effects - preliminary work on this, such as a site analysis, has already been carried out.

Another major project, the general inventory at the HMB, has also already begun. For this, the approximately 300,000 objects of the HMB are being digitally recorded. The basis for this was an effort assessment prepared by actori 2020. Through this decision-making basis, the canton has made 6.6 million Swiss francs available to the HMB for the implementation of the general inventory.

It is always a great pleasure to see projects come to life so quickly.
